During his three-decade crime fighting career, Major Williams has built a tremendous reputation for integrity and holding high expectations. His accomplishments include:

1993

He has served in a variety of positions and ranks during his tenure with the Indiana State Police. Following graduation from the academy in 1993, he was assigned to the Lowell Post:
-Road Trooper
-Community Oriented Policing Officer
-FBI Lead Northwest Indiana Gang Task Force Officer
-Gaming Officer
-Motor Officer on the Department’s Motorcycle Unit


2004
2004

In 2004, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, where he served in the Fiscal Division as a Research/Grants/Contracts Writer of Specification of Department Assets, a Liaison Officer between the Department and the Indiana Department of
Corrections, Criminal Investigation Division, and in Human Resources, primarily assisting with the Trooper selection processes.

2007

In 2007, he was promoted to rank of First Sergeant to serve as an internal investigator, to include Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) investigations.

2011
2011

In 2011, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, where he served as the District Commander of the Lowell District, the second largest district in the State of Indiana.

2014

In 2014, Jerry Williams was promoted to his current rank of Major.

2023
2023

In January 2023, City of Gary Mayor Jerome A. Prince sought out Major Williams to serve for six months as the Gary Police Department’s Interim Chief of Police, where he led reform efforts and oversaw the transformation of department processes.

2023

On October 23, 2023, Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb recognized Major Williams’ work with the Indiana State Police and the City of Gary Police Department with the Governor’s Public Service Achievement Award.

2023

On December 5, 2023, Mayor Prince awarded Major Williams with a Key to the City of Gary.

On January 1, 2024, Rev. Dr. Wayne L. Moore awarded Major Williams the Community Service Award in recognition of his outstanding community service above and beyond the call of normal duty.

Major Williams began his nearly 34-year law enforcement career as a Corrections Officer with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.
